TerraBytes: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TerraBytes is a storage cleaner for Windows and macOS. The app scans SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, Gmail and Outlook, NetApp, NAS, Azure Blob and local drives and flags duplicate, outdated and risky files. It calculates storage cost and CO2 impact per storage, folder or file and produces an action plan to delete, archive or move. The software is installed and, according to the vendor, runs locally with no external servers for the scanned data.

TerraBytes B.V. is based in Amsterdam; no parent company is named. According to the privacy policy, what the app reads from connected accounts stays in a database on your own device and is not uploaded to TerraBytes. Only account details, subscription status, app version and sign-in sessions reach the vendor's servers; the site does not say where those are located. Because the app reaches Microsoft 365 and Google through their APIs, the jurisdiction and terms of those providers still apply to the scanned storage.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TerraBytes

TerraBytes is headquartered in the Netherlands and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

TerraBytes runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

TerraBytes is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TerraBytes together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
