Textpattern: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Textpattern is a free, open-source content management system for building and running websites. It uses a tag-based template language to structure pages, has a lean core extended through plugins, and supports Textile markup natively, with Markdown available through a plugin. Its admin interface is available in more than fifty languages. It is written in PHP and works with MySQL. You install it yourself on a web server you control; the project's website describes no hosted service.

Textpattern is developed by the volunteer Textpattern Development Team, its source code is on GitHub, and it is licensed under the GNU GPL version 2. The project is not a commercial vendor. Where your data resides and which law applies to it is therefore determined by the hosting provider you choose: with a European host, the data stays in Europe. You can inspect, modify and keep running the open source code yourself, which limits dependence on a single supplier. The project website is hosted with sponsorship from DigitalOcean.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Textpattern

Textpattern is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Textpattern scores best on data residency.

Textpattern is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Textpattern together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
