TYPO3 is an open-source content management system and framework written in PHP. It supports multisite and multilingual websites and can be extended through extensions and an open API for frontend and backend. Long Term Support (LTS) versions are released for long-running projects, and Extended Long Term Support is available for organisations that need security updates for longer. TYPO3 runs on Linux, Windows, FreeBSD and macOS with Apache, nginx or IIS and a database such as MySQL. You install and operate it yourself. TYPO3 is recognised as a Verified Digital Public Good.
TYPO3 is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL-2.0). The project is governed by the TYPO3 Association, a not-for-profit association under Swiss law with its registered office in Baar, Switzerland, which guides and funds long-term development. Development relies on a volunteer community. TYPO3 GmbH is a service company wholly owned by the Association. Switzerland is not an EU member but belongs to EFTA. Because TYPO3 is self-hosted, you decide where the data resides.
