TimescaleDB is a time-series database that runs as an extension on PostgreSQL and is developed by TigerData (formerly Timescale, Inc.). It is aimed at sensor and machine data, for example from factories, energy grids and vehicle fleets. Features include automatic time-based partitioning, row and column storage with compression, continuous aggregates, retention policies and more than 200 SQL functions for time analysis. Access is through standard Postgres. You can host TimescaleDB yourself or use it as a managed service, Tiger Cloud.
The Apache 2 edition is open source. The more complete Community Edition is licensed under the Tiger Data License (TSL): free to self-host, but it may not be offered as a database service, although the source code is viewable. Tiger Cloud runs on AWS and Azure, with European regions in Frankfurt, Zurich, Ireland, London and Amsterdam. The listed sub-processors are AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, all US companies. The vendor is Timescale, Inc., doing business as Tiger Data, and is subject to US jurisdiction. Self-hosting keeps the data entirely under your control.
