Tiptap is a headless editor framework that developers use to build rich-text editors into their own web applications. The core is open source under the MIT licence and runs entirely inside your own application. On top of that, the company sells paid components, such as the Tiptap Platform with cloud documents, real-time collaboration and AI features. It is an alternative to proprietary editor SDKs: you keep the editor's source code in your own hands.
Tiptap GmbH is based in Berlin and, according to its privacy policy, is the GDPR controller. Customers of the Tiptap Platform can choose hosting in the US or the EU, according to the pricing page, and Enterprise customers can use a private or on-premises deployment. If you use only the open-source editor, documents stay in your own infrastructure. For the paid cloud features, the choice of EU hosting matters.
