Turnitin is a software-as-a-service platform for educational institutions that checks submitted student work against a database of earlier submissions, licensed academic sources and web content to flag possible plagiarism. It also offers online grading and feedback tools, peer review and, since 2023, a feature that detects AI-generated writing. Institutions typically connect it to their learning management system, such as Canvas or Moodle, through LTI, or use the Turnitin website directly.
Turnitin, LLC is headquartered in Oakland, California, and is a subsidiary of the US group Advance Publications, so it falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. According to the vendor, Feedback Studio data can be stored in a dedicated Frankfurt data centre, but this applies to newly created EU-region accounts; existing accounts remain in the global environment, and the submissions database is located in the United States. Turnitin signs data processing addenda and uses the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers. European institutions should check which region their account uses.
