Typemill: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Typemill is a lightweight flat-file CMS that works without a database. You write content in Markdown, and it is stored as files and folders. Editing happens in the browser, with a visual block editor or a raw Markdown editor. Typemill is aimed at documentation, manuals, websites and eBooks and is extended through plugins and themes. It also offers a media library, draft pages with publishing status, several projects side by side and optional AI-assisted writing through a separate interface that connects to providers with an OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic API. You install Typemill on your own server.

Typemill is developed by Sebastian Schürmanns in Berlin, Germany; no corporate parent company is named. The core is open source under the MIT licence. Additional plugins and themes come under commercial Maker and Business licences, sold through the reseller Paddle. Because you host it yourself, you decide where your content lives; no vendor cloud holds it. If you use the AI feature, text goes to the provider you configure, which can be a local model such as Ollama.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Typemill

Typemill is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Typemill scores best on data residency.

Typemill is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Typemill together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
