Veyon: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Veyon is software for classroom management and for monitoring and controlling computers in schools and other training environments. Teachers and IT administrators can view student screens, broadcast their own screen, take remote control of a workstation, distribute and collect files, open websites on student devices, send messages, lock workstations and manage logins and restarts. Veyon runs directly on the endpoints. Additional commercial add-ons cover, among other things, internet access control, device control, screen recording and synchronisation of users and devices with Microsoft 365 (Entra ID).

Veyon is developed by Veyon Solutions in Chemnitz, Germany, which says it has been active since 2004. The core is free and open-source software under the GPLv2; the optional add-ons are commercial. Veyon needs no cloud platform and can be deployed on the organisation's own infrastructure; no hosted service of its own is described. Only the optional Entra ID add-on connects to Microsoft 365, so schools that want to avoid that link can leave it out.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Veyon

Veyon is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Veyon scores best on data residency.

Veyon is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Veyon together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
