Visual Studio Code is a code editor for Windows, macOS and Linux with editing, navigation, debugging, Git integration and an integrated terminal, extensible through an extension marketplace. The editor also offers AI features and agents, including through GitHub Copilot. Developers and teams use it for a very wide range of programming languages. The software runs locally on your computer.
Visual Studio Code is developed by Microsoft, a US company. The source code (Code - OSS) is licensed under MIT, but the Visual Studio Code that Microsoft distributes is a distribution with Microsoft-specific customisations under a traditional Microsoft product licence. The editor collects telemetry by default, which you can reduce or turn off with the telemetry.telemetryLevel setting; Microsoft describes measures taken for GDPR. Online services such as the extension marketplace and Copilot run through Microsoft and GitHub. If you prefer not to use a Microsoft build, you can build the MIT-licensed source yourself.
