VMware NSX: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

VMware NSX is software for network virtualisation and network security. It creates virtual networks, routing and segmentation inside a data centre, independent of the physical network hardware, and includes a distributed firewall that filters traffic between workloads within the data centre. NSX is installed on the customer's own infrastructure and its features are enabled with licence keys. According to Broadcom's documentation it is part of VMware Cloud Foundation, and trade press reports that standalone VMware products are no longer sold.

NSX belongs to VMware, which has been part of the US company Broadcom since late 2023. The vendor is therefore subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. Because NSX runs on your own servers, network configuration and traffic stay within your environment in principle, and where data is processed is your own choice. The dependency lies mainly in licensing, updates and support terms set by Broadcom. The product is not open source. For European organisations this is a supplier dependency to weigh in contracts and exit plans.

Why digital sovereignty matters with VMware NSX

VMware NSX is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

VMware NSX runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

VMware NSX is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs VMware NSX together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
