VocBench is a web platform in which teams jointly build and maintain ontologies (OWL), thesauri (SKOS and SKOS-XL), lexicons (OntoLex-lemon) and other RDF datasets. It targets semantic-web and linked-data environments and is used by public bodies, companies and independent users who manage code lists, thesauri and authority files. The software is downloaded as a server application and installed by the user; its business and data-access layers run on Semantic Turkey.
VocBench is developed by the ART group of the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy), which is named as copyright holder on the project site. According to the project site, development was first funded by the European Commission's ISA² programme and is now funded by the Digital Europe Programme, managed by the Publications Office of the EU. The source code is released under the BSD-3-Clause licence and is therefore open source. Because the organisation hosts it itself, data stays on its own infrastructure; the maker offers no cloud service.
