WatchGuard Firebox: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

WatchGuard Firebox is WatchGuard's range of firewall appliances, described as next-generation firewalls and unified threat management systems. They come as tabletop units (T Series) for small offices and branches, as rackmount units (M Series), as the virtual firewall FireboxV and as Firebox Cloud for AWS and Azure. Features include antivirus and advanced threat blocking with sandboxing, network segmentation, user-based content filtering and Zero Trust remote access. Management runs through WatchGuard Cloud. WatchGuard sells only through partners and resellers.

WatchGuard Technologies, Inc. is based in Seattle (US) and privately held; Vector Capital has been the majority owner since 2022. The appliances run on your own premises, virtually or in your own cloud environment, but the cloud management platform has no published region list. The Trust Center states that the data processing addendum is incorporated into the end-user licence agreement, with standard contractual clauses for processing in the US, and that the company has self-certified to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Because the provider is American, US legislation such as the CLOUD Act may apply.

Is WatchGuard Firebox one of many dependencies?

Score your whole stack in about three minutes. Free, no account needed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with WatchGuard Firebox

WatchGuard Firebox is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

WatchGuard Firebox runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

WatchGuard Firebox is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs WatchGuard Firebox together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
