WildDuck: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

WildDuck is an open-source mail server for IMAP and POP3 that is scalable and has no single point of failure. All data, including email, is kept in a distributed MongoDB database with sharding and replication. Its product design follows that of Gmail. Accounts, mailboxes and messages are managed through a REST API with an OpenAPI specification. WildDuck is part of the Zone Mail Suite and is combined with an SMTP server for inbound and outbound mail, such as ZoneMTA. It is aimed at providers and organisations that run their own mail platform instead of subscribing to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

WildDuck is developed by Zone Media OÜ in Tallinn, Estonia, and released under the European Union Public Licence (EUPL) 1.2 or later. Zone Media has been owned by the Dutch Your.Online group since July 2026. The software is installed on your own infrastructure. The organisation decides where mailboxes are stored and how backups and access are managed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with WildDuck

WildDuck is headquartered in EE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in NL, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so WildDuck scores best on data residency.

WildDuck is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs WildDuck together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
