X2Go: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

X2Go is open-source remote desktop and remote application software for Linux. It is a server-based computing environment that scales from a single PC to larger networks with several servers and LDAP directories. It supports smart card authentication and suspending and resuming sessions. Users connect with an X2Go client to a remote desktop or an individual application.

X2Go is developed as a project under orca e.V., the Open Remote Computing Association, a registered German association. According to the SourceForge project page, the software is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2. The project wiki refers to companies that offer commercial support. Because X2Go runs on the organisation's own servers, no vendor cloud service hosts customer data. That makes it a self-hosted option for European organisations that want to keep sessions and data under their own control.
