Yahoo! Japan Maps: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Yahoo! Japan Maps (Yahoo!マップ) is the map service of Yahoo! JAPAN, a Japanese internet portal operated by LY Corporation. It is a Japanese-language consumer service available on the web at map.yahoo.co.jp and in Yahoo! JAPAN apps, focused on maps of Japan. In 2019 Yahoo! JAPAN and Mapbox announced that Mapbox would supply the map technology for Yahoo! JAPAN's mobile and online apps. The service is delivered as a hosted web and app offering; no self-hosted version is described.

LY Corporation is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and also operates the messaging service LINE. A majority stake of 62.3% is held by A Holdings, a joint venture of SoftBank Group (Japan) and Naver Corporation (South Korea). The service is therefore operated by a non-EU company under Japanese jurisdiction and is not open source. The public pages checked do not document an EU hosting option, so a European organisation that needs Japan map coverage should ask the vendor where data is processed before relying on it.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Yahoo! Japan Maps

Yahoo! Japan Maps is headquartered in JP, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Yahoo! Japan Maps hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Yahoo! Japan Maps is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Yahoo! Japan Maps together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
