ZoneMTA: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ZoneMTA is an open-source server for outbound email (MTA/MSA) built on Node.js. The queue is stored in MongoDB, with one entry per recipient and at-least-once delivery; Redis is used for locks and counters. It includes DKIM signing, a plugin system, delivery zones with their own IP pools and connection limits, IP warm-up through weighting, separate handling of hard and soft bounces, suppression lists and Prometheus metrics. It is installed and operated by the user. It is an alternative to hosted sending services such as Mailgun or SendGrid for organisations that want to run their own mail infrastructure.

ZoneMTA is created and maintained by Zone Media OÜ in Tallinn, Estonia, and released under the European Union Public Licence (EUPL). Zone Media has been owned by the Dutch Your.Online group since July 2026. Because the software runs on your own servers, the organisation decides where messages and queues are stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ZoneMTA

ZoneMTA is headquartered in EE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in NL, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so ZoneMTA scores best on data residency.

ZoneMTA is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ZoneMTA together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
