Ackee: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Ackee is a self-hosted web analytics tool built on Node.js and MongoDB, intended for people who care about privacy and do not need a full marketing platform such as Google Analytics or Matomo. Its interface is minimal and shows statistics on visits to your websites. Ackee uses no cookies and does not track unique users; data is anonymised so visitors cannot be identified, and according to its makers no cookie banner is needed. You can also measure events such as button clicks or newsletter sign-ups, and a documented GraphQL API allows custom tooling. It can be installed with Docker Compose, Docker, Helm or without Docker.

The tool is open source under the MIT licence and is made by Tobias Reich, who operates from Usingen, Germany. There is no hosted service: you run Ackee on your own server, so the data stays fully under your control and you choose the hosting location yourself, for example within the EU. You do remain responsible for updates and for the MongoDB database.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Ackee

Ackee is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Ackee hosts data outside the EU (self-hosted). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Ackee is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Ackee together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
