Actionstep: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Actionstep is a cloud platform for legal practice management, aimed at midsize law firms. It brings together case management, document automation, time tracking, billing, trust and legal accounting, client intake and CRM in one system. According to the website it uses automation and AI. Users sign in through a web interface with multi-factor authentication and single sign-on. The product is commercial software and not open source.

Actionstep is based in Auckland, New Zealand, and its website also lists an office address in Denver, Colorado, United States. Since October 2020 the private equity firm Serent Capital Partners has held a majority stake. The website names Amazon Web Services as its infrastructure but gives no hosting location and does not mention the GDPR. European organisations should therefore fix the hosting location, sub-processors and processing terms in the contract.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Actionstep

Actionstep is headquartered in NZ, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Actionstep hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Actionstep is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Actionstep together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
