Alation: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Alation is a data catalog platform for organising and governing data. The Alation Data Catalog helps teams find, understand and trust their data, with search, lineage, data quality, curation and AI-assisted features. Prebuilt connectors and an open connector framework link it to relational databases, files, BI systems and applications. Alation Cloud Service is a fully managed offering run by Alation itself; customer-managed deployments also exist.

Alation is headquartered in Redwood City, California, and is privately held. As a US company it falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. According to Alation, its cloud service maintains data centres in the United States, the EU, Singapore, Australia and Tokyo, so customers can choose a location that fits their compliance needs. The software is proprietary and not open source. For a European organisation, an EU location keeps the data within the EU, but the provider itself remains a US company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Alation

Alation is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Alation hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Alation is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Alation together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
