Soda: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Soda is a data quality and data observability platform. Teams monitor metrics and tables, write checks as code or in plain language, work with data contracts and detect anomalies down to record level. Failed records can be stored in your own data warehouse. Soda Core is the engine used to write and run data quality checks; Soda Cloud is the web environment where results are tracked. Soda is based in Brussels, Belgium.

Soda Cloud has separate endpoints for the EU (cloud.soda.io) and the US (cloud.us.soda.io). By default Soda sends only metadata and aggregated results to Soda Cloud; the underlying data stays in your own network, and sample or failed rows are sent only if you configure it. Soda-hosted runners run on AWS. Soda Core has moved from Apache 2.0 to the Elastic License 2.0: the source code is available and free to use, including in production, but it may not be offered to third parties as a managed service. It is therefore source-available rather than open source in the classic sense.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Soda

Soda is headquartered in BE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Soda hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Soda is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Soda together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
