Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) is the managed container orchestration service of Amazon Web Services. Teams use it to build, manage and run containerised applications without managing the underlying infrastructure. Containers run on AWS Fargate (serverless), on Amazon EC2 instances or, through ECS Anywhere, in on-premises and edge environments. According to AWS, the service offers automatic scaling, IAM roles, encryption in transit and at rest, and integrations with other AWS security services. ECS is delivered as a cloud service.
Amazon ECS belongs to Amazon Web Services, part of the US group Amazon, with headquarters in the United States. Customers choose the AWS Region in which their data is stored, including regions in Europe. AWS offers a GDPR data processing addendum under which standard contractual clauses apply automatically to transfers outside the EEA. Because the provider is American, US legislation such as the CLOUD Act can also apply to data held in a European region. ECS is an AWS-specific service, which affects how easily a workload can move to another provider.
