K3s is a lightweight, certified Kubernetes distribution aimed at edge, IoT, CI, development and ARM environments. It is packaged as a single binary that bundles components such as containerd, Flannel, CoreDNS and Traefik, uses SQLite by default with etcd or external SQL databases as options, and manages its own TLS certificates. Nodes run either as servers or as agents, and builds exist for x86_64, ARM and s390x. You install and operate K3s yourself on your own hardware or cloud instances.
K3s was originally developed by Rancher, which is now part of SUSE, and it is a CNCF Sandbox project released under the Apache 2.0 licence. SUSE is a company based in Luxembourg; its majority shareholder is a holding controlled by funds of the private equity firm EQT. Because K3s is self-operated open source software, data stays on the infrastructure you choose, including EU locations, and no vendor-hosted service is involved. The code can also be run and audited independently of SUSE.
