SUSE Rancher is an open-source platform for managing multiple Kubernetes clusters from one place. It provides cluster lifecycle management, policy and security features, and tools for developers, and it manages clusters in data centres, in the cloud and at the edge. Rancher Prime is the commercial offering with support and certified, secured Kubernetes distributions; related community projects include K3s and Longhorn. The code is published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 licence. You install Rancher yourself, and a fully managed Rancher service for Amazon EKS is also available through the AWS Marketplace.
Rancher has been part of SUSE since December 2020. SUSE has its corporate seat in Luxembourg and is owned by EQT AB, a Swedish investment firm. If you run Rancher yourself in your own data centre or an EU cloud, you decide where data resides. The managed variant runs on AWS, a US cloud provider, so organisations that want to avoid that should choose self-managed operation.
