SUSE Linux Enterprise: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) is SUSE's enterprise Linux distribution for data centres, cloud and edge. It offers live patching without reboots, a High Availability Extension for clustering, immutable deployments through SUSE Linux Micro, a high-performance computing edition and a real-time variant. Editions exist for SAP applications, and x86, ARM, IBM Power and IBM Z are supported. SLES runs on your own hardware and is also available through the AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle marketplaces. The vendor cites a Common Criteria EAL4+ certification.

SUSE S.A. has its corporate seat in Luxembourg and its operational centre in Nuremberg. It is owned by EQT AB, a Swedish investment firm, and has not been listed on a stock exchange since 2023. SLES is based on open source, and where your data resides depends on where you choose to run the system. For European organisations it is a Linux platform from a vendor seated in the EU and owned from within Europe.

SUSE Linux Enterprise is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.
