Gardener is a managed Kubernetes service that lets organisations run fully managed clusters at scale on their own installation, across many infrastructures. It provisions clusters with the same configuration on platforms such as OpenStack, metal-stack, IronCore, STACKIT, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and Alibaba Cloud, and adds self-healing, auto-scaling and fleet-wide version and guardrail controls. Clusters are managed through a UI or kubectl, and control plane components run as workloads in separate "seed" clusters instead of on dedicated master machines.
Gardener is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence and was presented in 2018 by SAP engineers. It is now neutrally governed under the NeoNephos Foundation, an initiative of Linux Foundation Europe, which is based in Brussels and was launched in 2025 to support digital autonomy in Europe. Gardener is software that an organisation or provider operates itself, so the location of clusters and data depends on the infrastructure chosen.
