Apache Cassandra is an open-source, distributed NoSQL database built for large data volumes and high availability. Every node is identical and there is no central master, so the loss of a node, or even a whole data centre, need not cause data loss. Data is replicated across data centres, and you choose the consistency level per operation. Capacity grows by adding machines without interrupting applications, and audit logging records DML, DDL and DCL activity. Cassandra is software you run yourself, on-premises or in a public or private cloud.
Cassandra is developed under the Apache Software Foundation, a US non-profit, and is released under the Apache License 2.0. No commercial owner controls it and there is no fixed storage location: your data sits wherever you deploy your own cluster. A European organisation can therefore run Cassandra on EU infrastructure under its own control. If you choose a managed Cassandra service from a third party, that provider's jurisdiction and hosting location determine the legal position.
