Apple Photos is Apple's photo library on iPhone, iPad and Mac. With iCloud Photos, pictures and videos are stored in iCloud while devices keep space-saving versions. Users can create Shared Albums, including with people on Android or Windows, and share a Shared Photo Library with a few other people. The service is delivered as an app on Apple devices connected to Apple's cloud storage.
Apple is headquartered in the United States. According to its privacy policy, personal data of individuals in the EEA is controlled by Apple Distribution International Limited in Ireland but generally stored by Apple Inc. in the United States, with standard contractual clauses for transfers. Apple and third-party data centres may store and process data. Under standard protection, Apple holds the keys. With the optional Advanced Data Protection, photos are end-to-end encrypted, except for some metadata and Shared Albums. There is no self-hosted variant, so storage remains under US jurisdiction.
