Broadcom Automic Automation: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Automic Automation is Broadcom's workload automation and orchestration product. Organisations use it to schedule, run and monitor business processes and batch jobs across mainframe, distributed and hybrid cloud environments. It is offered as an on-premises installation that you operate yourself and, since May 2024, as a service called Automic SaaS, where Broadcom runs the infrastructure for the automation engine and database. The software is not open source.

The product originates from Automic, a company founded in 1985 with an office in Vienna. CA Technologies acquired Automic in 2017, and Broadcom, a US company, acquired CA in November 2018. For European organisations, the vendor is therefore subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. With the on-premises edition, you decide where the data resides. For Automic SaaS, the sources reviewed do not state hosting regions, so confirm them with Broadcom.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Broadcom Automic Automation

Broadcom Automic Automation is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Broadcom Automic Automation runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Broadcom Automic Automation is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Broadcom Automic Automation together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
