ClassicPress: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ClassicPress is a free, open-source content management system forked from WordPress 6.2. It keeps the familiar WordPress administration experience while removing the Gutenberg block editor and full site editing. The software is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later and is installed by the operator on its own web server. It is aimed at site owners who prefer the classic WordPress editing experience.

ClassicPress is directed by the ClassicPress Initiative, a non-profit organisation registered under section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. There is no commercial parent company. Because the software is open source, the operator decides where the data is hosted. A European organisation can run ClassicPress inside the EU and keep full control over where its data is stored, but it also carries full responsibility for hosting and data protection.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ClassicPress

ClassicPress is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

ClassicPress hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

ClassicPress is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ClassicPress together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
