CloudFerro: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

CloudFerro is a Polish cloud provider focused on space, Earth observation, defence and meteorology, while also serving public institutions and businesses. Its offer includes public clouds with virtual machines, GPU instances, a Kubernetes service and object, block and other storage, plus private clouds and white-label clouds. The platform is based on OpenStack and Ceph. CloudFerro also offers an Earth observation data repository (EODATA), platforms such as CREODIAS and the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, and Sherlock, a managed generative AI platform with OpenAI-compatible endpoints.

CloudFerro S.A. is based in Warsaw, Poland. In 2024 Innova Capital took a minority stake in the company. The public clouds run in data centres in Poland (including facilities operated by Netia and Orange) and in Germany (NTT/e-shelter), so within the EU. CloudFerro uses open-source technology but delivers its services as a managed cloud rather than as a product you host yourself. According to the company, it complies with the GDPR and holds BSI and ISO certifications.

Why digital sovereignty matters with CloudFerro

CloudFerro is headquartered in PL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so CloudFerro scores best on data residency.

CloudFerro is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs CloudFerro together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
