Contabo is a hosting provider from Munich, founded in 2003. It offers virtual private servers (VPS), dedicated servers, object storage and GPU servers. These are hosted infrastructure services in which the customer takes compute, storage and servers directly.
Contabo is headquartered in Germany. Since 2022 the US investment firm KKR has held a majority stake, with Oakley Capital as a minority shareholder. A US parent company is a CLOUD Act signal: US authorities can in principle demand access to data even when it is stored in Europe. Contabo offers data centre locations in Germany, but also elsewhere, including the United Kingdom, the United States and Asia-Pacific. Only customers who choose a German location keep their data within the EU. The offering itself is not open source. For European organisations, both the chosen location and the US control of the parent company therefore matter.
