Databricks is a data and AI platform built around the lakehouse approach. It brings data engineering, analytics, data warehousing, machine learning and AI agent development together in one workspace built on Apache Spark. Unity Catalog manages permissions, lineage and auditing, Lakeflow handles data pipelines, and Databricks SQL runs analytical queries. The platform is delivered as a managed cloud service on AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.
Databricks, Inc. is a privately held US company headquartered in San Francisco, founded by the creators of Apache Spark. Several of its building blocks, such as Apache Spark, Delta Lake and MLflow, are open source, but the Databricks platform itself is a commercial service. On AWS, supported European regions include Frankfurt, Ireland, London and Paris; Azure and Google Cloud have their own region lists. A European organisation can therefore run workloads in an EU region, but the vendor falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act.
