Dataverse is open-source software for research data repositories. It is designed to share, find, cite and preserve research data. Universities, research institutes and data archives use it to publish and manage datasets. It is a web application that each institution installs and operates on its own servers or cloud environment, and it is an alternative to hosted services such as Figshare or Mendeley Data.
Dataverse is developed by the Dataverse team at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States; the Dataverse name is a trademark of The President and Fellows of Harvard College. The software is released under the Apache 2.0 licence, so a European institution can install, audit and modify it. Because each institution runs its own installation, where data is stored depends on where that institution hosts it. The US origin of the software does not by itself place data under US control.
