Dropbox is a cloud platform for file storage, synchronisation and collaboration, aimed at teams, independent professionals and individuals. Uploaded files are available from a computer, phone or tablet, and folders can be synchronised as a backup. Files are shared through links, with options such as a password, an expiry date and download permissions, and deleted files can be restored for a limited period. Dropbox also offers Office file editing, PDF annotation and signing, the Paper document tool, integrations with services such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, and administration tools. It is delivered as software as a service, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and the web.
Dropbox, Inc. is a US company based in San Francisco and listed on Nasdaq. According to Dropbox, business customers have been able to have their files hosted in Europe, in Germany, since 2016, with Amazon Web Services as infrastructure partner. Dropbox is not open source and cannot be self-hosted. It remains a US provider, so US legislation such as the CLOUD Act can apply.
