edgeContinuum: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

edgeContinuum is a cloud platform that turns an organisation's own infrastructure into a managed, cloud-like environment. It adds a management layer on top of servers the customer already owns or controls, offering managed Kubernetes, managed PostgreSQL, virtual machines and an application marketplace through one console and API. It targets service providers that resell managed services and enterprises that want to offer internal self-service. The platform integrates with OpenStack, works alongside an existing hypervisor, and can be used as SaaS or run fully on-premises, including in air-gapped environments.

edgeContinuum is based in Spain and originates from research at the atlanTTic research centre of the University of Vigo. Because the software runs on the customer's own infrastructure, the customer decides where data is located. When used as a SaaS console, it is not confirmed where the management data is hosted. The platform itself is not open source; the company's GitHub page contains only a few supporting projects.

Why digital sovereignty matters with edgeContinuum

edgeContinuum is headquartered in ES and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

edgeContinuum runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

edgeContinuum is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs edgeContinuum together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
