ArcGIS is Esri's geospatial platform for professionals and organisations in business and government. It covers mapping in 2D, 3D and real time, spatial analytics with AI-assisted workflows, field operations and workforce routing, data management with editing and offline use, and imagery and remote sensing. Uses include asset and network management, logistics, public safety, urban planning and risk analytics. ArcGIS comprises desktop applications such as ArcGIS Pro, the cloud service ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise, which can run in the cloud or on an organisation's own servers.
Esri is headquartered in Redlands, California, and is privately held by its founders. The software is not open source. With ArcGIS Online, the customer chooses a hosting region at purchase: United States, European Union or Asia-Pacific, and the choice cannot be changed afterwards. In the EU region, uploads and saved content are stored in the EU, but authentication is processed in the United States. Organisations that want to keep data entirely under their own control can host ArcGIS Enterprise themselves.
