Fastmail: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Fastmail is an email service with calendar and contacts for individuals and organisations. Users work in the web app and in iOS and Android apps, can use their own domain name, and can migrate mail, calendars and contacts from other providers. Fastmail also offers a public API and helped develop JMAP, an open email protocol; its developers contribute to the open-source Cyrus IMAP project. The service itself is proprietary software delivered as SaaS.

Fastmail is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, with an office in Philadelphia in the United States. The company has been independent since 2013, when staff bought it back from Opera Software. A European organisation is therefore dealing with a non-EU jurisdiction. In July 2026 Fastmail announced a data centre in Amsterdam: from August 2026 European customers can have the primary copy of their data stored in the EU. That data is still replicated to the United States for resiliency, and Fastmail expects the setup to change over time.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Fastmail

Fastmail is headquartered in AU, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Fastmail hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Fastmail is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Fastmail together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
