FigJam: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

FigJam is Figma's online whiteboard for brainstorming, diagramming, workshops, meetings and agile formats such as stand-ups and retrospectives. Teams work together on a shared canvas with sticky notes, stamps, comments, audio chat and templates. AI can generate templates, group stickies into themes and summarise results, and there are integrations with tools such as Asana, Jira and GitHub. FigJam runs in the browser, with an iPad app, and is included with every Figma plan.

Figma, Inc. is headquartered in San Francisco and listed on the NYSE; it has no foreign parent. Files are stored in the United States by default. Enterprise customers can have FigJam file content hosted in the EU, with Frankfurt as the primary location and Dublin as backup. User metadata and login data are not hosted in the EU, and items such as comments and file names are not localised. FigJam is proprietary. For a European organisation, the EU option therefore requires the Enterprise plan and still leaves part of the data outside the EU.

Why digital sovereignty matters with FigJam

FigJam is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

FigJam hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

FigJam is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs FigJam together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
