Flatcar Container Linux is an operating system designed to run container workloads. According to the project, it contains only what is needed to run containers, and its system partition is read-only. It is aimed at operators of Kubernetes and other container platforms who want a minimal Linux base on their own servers or virtual machines, rather than a service hosted by a vendor.
The project is open source and published on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 licence. Flatcar is a Series of LF Projects, LLC, part of the Linux Foundation, with a mailing address in San Francisco, California. Its copyright notice credits the Flatcar project contributors. For organisations with strict jurisdiction requirements, the US foundation that is its legal home is relevant; the software runs on hardware the customer controls, however, so data location and operational control stay with the organisation.
