Geany: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Geany is a small, fast text editor and lightweight integrated development environment (IDE) for programmers. It offers syntax highlighting, code folding, symbol lists, code navigation, auto-completion, a simple build system and project management, and can be extended with plugins. It supports many file types, from C, Java and PHP to HTML and Python. Geany runs on Linux, the BSD systems, macOS and Windows, is installed locally as a desktop program and needs only the GTK libraries, so it does not depend on a particular desktop environment.

Geany is free software under the GNU General Public Licence, version 2, developed by a community of contributors. The project is represented by Geany e.V., a registered association in Germany that gives the project a legal entity and handles donations; development itself stays with the core developers and the community. Because the editor is an ordinary program on your own computer and no hosted service is described, your files stay with you. Source code and releases are published openly, so organisations can audit, package and distribute it themselves.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Geany

Geany is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Geany scores best on data residency.

Geany is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Geany together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
