GleSYS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

GleSYS is a Swedish cloud and hosting provider offering private and public cloud (KVM VPS, VMware Cloud Director), dedicated and GPU servers, colocation, network services such as DNS, firewalls and load balancers, object, file and archive storage, and managed services such as databases and disaster recovery. Infrastructure can be automated through an API. The services are consumed as a hosted cloud. According to its website, the company builds its own data centres, servers and networks.

GleSYS is headquartered in Sweden. In 2023 it was reported that Cube Infrastructure Managers, an infrastructure investor based in Luxembourg, would take a majority stake, so the parent sits in another EU member state. The company's own data centres are in Falkenberg and Stockholm in Sweden and in Oulu, Pori and Tampere in Finland, complemented by partner data centres in places including Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Oslo. The platform is not open source; only the API documentation is public on GitHub. GleSYS states that it uses renewable electricity and holds ISO 14001 certification.

Why digital sovereignty matters with GleSYS

GleSYS is headquartered in SE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in LU, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so GleSYS scores best on data residency.

GleSYS is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs GleSYS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
