HPE Morpheus VM Essentials is virtualisation software from Hewlett Packard Enterprise for private cloud environments. It includes HPE's own HVM hypervisor, which is based on KVM, and can also manage existing VMware clusters and ESXi machines from a single interface. According to HPE it offers high availability, live migration, distributed workload placement, integrated data protection, external storage support and a bulk migration tool from VMware. The software is installed on the customer's own infrastructure.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise has been headquartered in Houston, Texas since its 2020 move and is therefore subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. Because the product runs on your own servers, workloads and data stay in principle within the customer's environment, so the hosting location is the customer's own choice. Vendor dependence does shift from VMware to HPE, however: licences, updates and support come from a US supplier. The HVM hypervisor build is not open source, although underlying components such as KVM are. A European organisation reviewing its virtualisation layer can consider it as an alternative to VMware, alongside open-source options.
