Hyperfocus: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Hyperfocus is a goals-first planner for macOS. From a few long-term goals you build weekly plans, daily plans and focused work blocks in one workspace. The app is local-first: tasks, plans and goals stay on your Mac and work offline, and no account is required. An optional AI review checks your plans. In the initial period it runs through Cloudflare to Google Gemini; afterwards you can connect your own OpenRouter account, which sends requests directly to the model provider you choose. Those providers can be based in the United States. The app is not open source.

Hyperfocus has no company behind it; it is made by an independent developer in Georgia, and its terms are governed by Georgian law. There is no parent company. Downloads are hosted on AWS, and the app uses PostHog for product analytics that exclude the content of tasks and plans. The privacy policy lists rights such as access, deletion and export, but does not refer to the GDPR. Data you do not send to the AI stays on your device.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Hyperfocus

Hyperfocus is headquartered in GE, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Hyperfocus runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Hyperfocus is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Hyperfocus together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
