CryptPad: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

CryptPad is an end-to-end encrypted, open-source collaboration suite. Its apps cover rich-text documents, Markdown and code, spreadsheets, presentations, forms, kanban boards and diagrams, and a drive organises files in folders. Several people can edit a document in real time. CryptPad is delivered either as a hosted service, with cryptpad.fr as the flagship instance, or as software that an organisation installs on its own servers, with official Docker images available.

CryptPad is developed by a team at XWiki SAS, a company with staff in France and Romania, and is licensed under AGPL-3.0. The instances list shows cryptpad.fr as hosted in France; other instances run by third parties are hosted in various countries. According to the documentation, the server has no access to document content, but it can see IP addresses and user agents, and the encryption code is served by the host, so users must trust the administrator to deliver unmodified code. Self-hosting lets a European organisation choose the location and the administrator itself.

Why digital sovereignty matters with CryptPad

CryptPad is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so CryptPad scores best on data residency.

CryptPad is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs CryptPad together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
