Anytype: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Anytype is a personal knowledge base for gathering, connecting and reworking information. Users create pages, tasks, wikis and journals and define their own data model. Desktop clients exist for macOS, Windows and Linux, plus mobile apps. Data is stored on the user's device by default, and syncing between devices is optional. According to the project, content is end-to-end encrypted and the sync network is "blind": its nodes relay encrypted data without reading it.

Anytype is operated by Any Association, a Swiss association domiciled in Zug, with a representative in Berlin for GDPR purposes. According to its privacy policy, the Anytype Network is maintained in Switzerland and the European Union. The sync and backup network can also be self-hosted with a maintained Docker Compose setup, which keeps sync data off Anytype's own nodes. The application code is published under the Any Source Available License 1.0, so it is source-available rather than fully open source. Switzerland is outside the EU but a member of EFTA.
