HedgeDoc: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

HedgeDoc is an open-source, web-based collaborative Markdown editor for notes, graphs and presentations. It runs in the browser and supports real-time collaboration, a presentation mode built on reveal.js, diagrams, a simple permission system and revision history. The project was formerly called CodiMD and was renamed in 2020. HedgeDoc is delivered as self-hosted software, with a ready-to-use bundle and a Docker image, and runs even on low-resource hardware such as a Raspberry Pi.

HedgeDoc is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and maintained by volunteers; the website lists a core development team and names no company behind it. Version 1.x is in maintenance mode, while version 2 is a rewrite still in development. Because the software is run by the organisation itself, notes are stored on the server it operates, so data location, access and retention are decided by the operator. There is no vendor-hosted service, which means no foreign parent company and no third-party processor for the software itself.
