Notefox: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Notefox is a browser extension for Firefox, Chrome and Edge that lets you take notes on any website. Notes are tied to the page where you wrote them, support rich-text formatting and can be searched by title, content and URL. A free Notefox account syncs your notes between devices; without an account they stay on your own device.

Notefox is a project by Saverio Morelli, an independent developer based in Italy, and according to the website it is open source. There is no parent company outside the EU. Synced data is stored on Aruba.it servers in Italy and, according to the privacy policy, does not leave the European Economic Area. Notes and settings are encrypted at rest on the server with AES-256-CBC, using a separate key for each account; the password is not stored, so data cannot be recovered without it. The website also says you can run your own sync server. Note that a single developer stands behind the project.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Notefox

Notefox is headquartered in IT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Notefox scores best on data residency.

Notefox is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Notefox together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
