Icedrive: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Icedrive is a cloud file storage service with web, desktop and mobile apps. Its desktop software mounts your storage as a virtual drive on your computer, so files appear without using local disk space. Users can share files, and a free entry-level offer exists. According to Icedrive's help page, encryption happens on the client side using Twofish with a 256-bit key generated on your device and never sent to the servers. File and folder names are encrypted too; encrypted files cannot be shared.

The service is offered by Ice Privacy LTD and is a hosted cloud service; self-hosting and open source are not available. The pages consulted do not state in which countries the data centres are located, so confirm this with the provider if it matters. If you lose the encryption passphrase, Icedrive states that the encrypted data cannot be recovered.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Icedrive

Icedrive is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Icedrive scores best on data residency.

Icedrive is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Icedrive together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
