inSign: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

inSign is an electronic signature solution for PDF, Word and Excel documents. It supports simple, advanced and qualified signatures under eIDAS and ZertES; the handwritten biometric signature is the standard method, and identification for qualified signatures can take place by video or automatic ID check. It is offered as a standalone web application (inSign 365), as an API licence for integration (inSign connect) and as an individually configured system (inSign enterprise). A REST API and connectors for Microsoft, SAP and Salesforce are available.

inSign GmbH is based in Marzling near Freising, Germany, and is owned by BSI Business Systems Integration Deutschland GmbH, which belongs to the Swiss BSI Software group. According to the vendor, the servers are located in Germany and operated by German companies, without reliance on US cloud providers. The company and its data centres are stated to be ISO 27001 and C5 certified. inSign is proprietary software; no open-source edition is described. For a European organisation, the combination of a German vendor, a Swiss parent and hosting in Germany keeps signed documents under European jurisdiction.

Why digital sovereignty matters with inSign

inSign is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in CH, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so inSign scores best on data residency.

inSign is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs inSign together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
