Kopia: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Kopia is open-source backup and restore software that creates encrypted, compressed and deduplicated snapshots. It is intended for anything from laptops to larger servers and is operated through the command line or a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, in which you create snapshots, set policies and restore files. Backups can be stored on Amazon S3 and compatible storage, Azure Blob Storage, Backblaze B2, Google Cloud Storage, WebDAV, SFTP, local disks or network storage, or through a self-hosted Kopia Repository Server.

Kopia is a community project whose source code is licensed under the Apache License 2.0; the website names no company as its maker. There is therefore no vendor hosting your data: you choose the storage location yourself, so a European storage provider or your own storage keeps data within Europe. By default Kopia uses AES-256-GCM encryption, with CHACHA20-POLY1305 as an alternative; the choice is fixed when the repository is created. The repository password cannot be recovered, so keep it safe.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Kopia

Kopia is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Kopia scores best on data residency.

Kopia is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Kopia together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
